How Indian students are earning more via PGWP

Abstract: Indian students in Canada who have PGWP permits can earn more than CAD 26,800.

Highlights:

  • The number of Indian students in Canada who get the PGWP or Post-Graduation Work Permit has increased.
  • The international students in Canada who are issued PGWP are primarily from India and China.
  • The number of PGWP holders increased by 13 times from 2008 to 2018.

The PGWP or Post Graduation Work Permit facilitates international students in Canada to work in the country for up to 3 years. Their work duration depends on the time taken to complete their academic program. The students can work anywhere in the country.

The study by Statistics Canada

A study by Statistics Canada found that the number of foreign national graduates getting the PGWP has been increasing.

Statistics Canada did a study on the participation of PGWP graduates in the labor market of Canada. The period of 2008 to 2018 saw the growing involvement of PGWP holders in the workforce. They also reported that their income grew 13 times more.

In 2008, around 10,300 PGWP holders were in the workforce, whereas in 2018, the numbers rose to 135,100. The rate of participation has been consistent, with 3/4th of the PGWP holders declaring earnings each year.

The average annual income of the holders of PGWP has been hiked from $14,500 (2008) to $26,800 (2018). This figure is adjusted to mirror the changes in the value of the dollar in the past decade. The earnings suggest that there has been a growth in the labor input.

Requirements for PGWP

These are the following requirements to be given the PGWP:

  • Graduation from a full-time program of eight months authorized by a DLI or the Designated Learning Institution.
  • The students who had enrolled in the pandemic would be exempted
  • Studies should have completed the course in person to be eligible for the PGWP
  • The foreign national students pursuing their course online from March 2020 to August 31, 2022, will be considered for the permit.

The validity of the PGWP is the same as the duration of the program which they were enrolled in.The programs which have duration of minimum two years are eligible for PGWP that lasts 3 years.

How was PGWP started

The initiative of PGWP was launched in 2003. It was a pilot program for certain provinces. Later, it expanded all over the country in 2005. In 2008, the program allowed students who graduated recently to be employed under any employer in Canada. They were employed for three years.

In 2014, the holders of the study permit were given the freedom to work after they had completed their studies. They could do so while awaiting their approval for PGWP.

The changes were implemented to make Canada a lucrative destination for international students. It also aimed at providing them pathways for permanent residency.
