According to a report by the Census Bureau of the US, immigrants comprise almost 14 percent of the U.S. population, which comes to more than 44 million out of a total population of about 327 million in the country.
The report says that immigrants and their US born children together make up 28 percent of the total population. The immigrant population has seen a steady rise since 1970 when there were only 10 million migrants in the US. Mexico is the most common country of origin for migrants in the country. They make up about 25 percent of the population. At the same time, the percentage of migrants from South and East Asia which presently stands at 27 percent is on the rise. The number of undocumented immigrants stands at 11 million.
Legal migration
About 1.1 million immigrants received legal permanent residency in 2018. Most of them were given based on family reunification. The other reasons include employment, refugees, diversity, and asylum. About 3.5 million applicants were on the State Department’s waiting list for immigrant visas at the end of 2019.
Americans’ opinion on migration
According to a Gallup poll in 2019, 76 percent of Americans considered immigration a positive thing for the country. 81 percent of the population felt that undocumented immigrants should be given citizenship if they meet certain requirements.
A majority of those surveyed felt that immigration should be maintained at the present level. 57% of US nationals felt that refugees from Central America should be allowed into the country. 55% of those surveyed felt that immigrants are a positive influence on the economy.
With immigration continuing to be the center of political debate nt eh country, the issue is likely to become more prominent in view of the US presidential elections at the end of this year.
