The new Immigration Minister of Australia David Coleman has said that immigration is crucial to the success of Australia. He has also flagged revamping of Australia Regional visas. Some towns in Australia are in fact begging for immigrants, said the Minister.
Coleman said that immigration has been as fundamental for the success of Australia as a nation. The history of Australia is one of immigration. This is because excluding Indigenous Australians, we all are immigrants, said the Immigration Minister.
44% of my electorate is born overseas, said the Immigration Minister.
We are closely examining the gaps in the labor market in rural Australia, said Coleman. At present there are several Regional Visas, he said. The effectiveness of each of these programs and possible ways of betterment is being assessed, he added.
David Coleman said that several Australian regions are demanding for 1000s of immigrants. These include entire South Australia, Western Australia’s Goldfields region and Warrnambool in Victoria. There are many regions and towns at the moment demanding extra immigrants, he said. This is for the fulfillment of their economic needs, said Coleman, as quoted by the SBS.
Australian employment has quite a few gaps regionally at present, said the Minister. Department of Home Affairs has compiled the figures for the fiscal year 2016-17. These reveal that 10, 198 Visas were offered under the Regional Sponsored Migration Scheme. 1, 670 Skilled Regional Visas were awarded. These form just 10% of the Australia PR Visas.
The portfolio of Immigration was bifurcated from the Home Affairs Department of Peter Dutton. It was given to Coleman along with Multicultural Affairs and Citizenship ministries.
