Why immigration matters to Newfoundland and Labrador

Immigration is being prioritized by the Canadian province of Newfoundland and Labrador.

Newfoundland and Labrador is made up of 9 distinct regions.

7 of these regions are located on the island of Newfoundland. The mainland of Labrador has the other 2 regions.

While the province had become a part of Canada in 1949, it was only in 2001 that the name was officially changed to the present Newfoundland and Labrador.

Seeking to attract as well as retain newcomers for addressing the aging and declining population, immigration has been one of the top priorities among the political party campaigns. With the cancellation of in-person voting, a day before the provincial elections – scheduled for February 13, 2021 – Canada’s NL province has completely shifted to mail-in voting instead. Ballots are to be accepted until March 1, 2021.

Though typically not the first choice for many immigrants, the Canadian province of Newfoundland and Labrador nonetheless has much to offer any newcomer that chooses to settle within NL.

Immigration has always been important to the development of NL.

Settlement of immigrants throughout the province has shaped the provincial identity of NL, defining NL’s social, economic, cultural, and demographic growth.

At 45 years, NL has the highest median age in Canada.

As per projections, by 2025, the province will witness a 13% decrease in the number of individuals between the ages of 20 to 59 years. The number of residents that are 60+ years will, during the same period, increase by 27%.

Now, these demographic changes within NL can have many and far-reaching implications. According to an official publication – The Way Forward on Immigration in Newfoundland and Labrador – “immigration is a key component of economic and labour market growth and the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador is committed to do its part to increase immigration to the province.” As per the Report, by the year 2022, Newfoundland and Labrador plans on welcoming around 1,700 immigrants a year. In 2015, NL welcomed 1,122 immigrants.

Canada’s Atlantic Immigration Pilot [AIP] offers Canada immigration pathways for those intending settling within the Atlantic Provinces –

·         Newfoundland and Labrador,

·         Prince Edward Island,

·         New Brunswick, and

·         Nova Scotia

in Canada after being granted their Canadian permanent residence.

The NL PNP also offer various immigrant streams through the Provincial Nominee Program [PNP] of Canada, each directed at a specific class of immigrants.

A new immigration program – Priority Skills Newfoundland and Labrador – has been launched by the NL PNP on January 2, 2021.

The government of Newfoundland and Labrador, along with its partners, are taking a collaborative approach for better responding to the changing requirements of the provincial economy and society. Immigration remains a key part of this collaborative approach. Prospective skilled immigrants have a wide range of options when selecting a new place in which to work, settle and raise a family in the province. Newfoundland and Labrador is being positioned to compete as a destination of choice for many immigrating to Canada for a better future.
