India takes up H1B Visa problems with President Trump In his maiden visit to India, President Donald Trump and his wife, Melania Trump, were greeted by a huge crowd in the new Motera Stadium in Ahmedabad. A day after in New Delhi, PM Modi formally discussed relations between India and the US. At a meeting at Hyderabad House in New Delhi, PM Modi said that the foundation of India-US friendship is based on the people-to-people relations between both countries. President Trump’s stand on “America First” and protecting the American worker worries the Indian Govt. that it could severely hit the Indian IT industry. Concerns were raised over Trump’s proposed changes to the H1B and L1 Visa programs of the US. The proposed changes could affect skilled Indian workers, especially the ones in IT, to live and work in the US. PM Modi said that the Indian diaspora in the US is a huge contributor to the growth in India-US relations. Indians in the US not only contribute to the US economy with their skills and hard work but also enrich the American culture with their values and rich heritage. On 18th April 2017, President Trump issued the “Buy American and Hire American” executive order. The order required various US departments to suggest reform to the H1B Visa Program. The US has also begun taking preventive measures to tackle the abuse of the US Work Visa Programs. As per the latest USCIS statistics, the US processed 168,600 new H1B Petitions in FY2019. Out of these, 35,633 or 21.1% of the Visas were rejected. Indian nationals accounted for 70% of all H1B Visas between FY2015 and FY2018. The Indian Govt. has been urging the US to refrain from making any further changes to the H1B or L1 Visa Program.
