Donald Trump announced complete support for the H-1B visa program for skilled foreign workers in December 2024. Elon Musk, Tesla's CEO, also backed the decision. Amidst the ongoing discussion, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said that the H-1B visas for Indian nationals would benefit the India-US ties.
"Both our countries have a strong and growing economic and technological partnership, and within this ambit, mobility of skilled professionals is an important component," said MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal in an interview.

The H-1B visa program has benefitted both India and the USA, with Indians remaining the top H-1B visa holders. As per the latest report released by the US State Department, nearly 77%, that is 320,000 H-1B visas, were issued to Indians in 2022, and 265,777 H-1B visas, that is, 78%, in 2023. A majority of Indians work in the US, as Indians continue to be among the top H-1B visa holders.
