Indian students have always been attracted to the idea of studying abroad. In recent time they are open to exploring study opportunities in countries ranging from Tajikistan to Slovenia.
The overseas affairs ministry in India recently released data on the number of Indian students studying abroad. The number stands at more than 8 lakh students at present.
There are many reasons for the increase in numbers. One of them is the opening of branches of iconic universities across the world. For instance, many Indian students in Cyprus are studying for a Harvard degree.
Medical degree aspirants are now looking beyond China and Russia. They are looking at institutes where the entry requirements are less rigid and the fees are significantly low compared to those in Indian institutes.
These findings are corroborated by a UNESCO report which says the number of international students across the world went up from 20 lakhs in 200 to 53 lakhs in 2017.
However, education consultants warn that student needs to do a thorough review before enrolling for courses in small and obscure universities across the world. They warned that students going to these places for medical degrees find it attractive because of the low fees and easy admission. In fact, if the institute is in a EU country, a five year internship gives them access to EU citizenship.
But the fact remains that degrees in these obscure institutions find little value in India. Indian companies think twice before hiring those with foreign degrees, so such students find it difficult to get a job in Indian firms.
On the other hand, stricter immigration rules in countries like the US are forcing many students to return to India where they may not find a job meeting their expectations. This makes them wonder if a foreign degree was worth pursuing.
