The economists at the University of Waterloo recently conducted a survey and found that international students in Canada are earning more than recent Canadian graduates. Records provided by IRCC and Canada Revenue Agency’s T1 income tax returns were surveyed to reach to come to this conclusion.
Recent statistical data revealed that international graduates of 2017-2019 were earning 37% more than the Canada-born graduates at the University of Waterloo. The average annual earnings of international graduates were $57,500 after one year of graduation while the same for Canada-born grads were $42,000. Earnings of international graduates even surpassed Canada-born graduates at the national level. The difference in average annual earnings of the two groups is $56,400 vs. $38,700, marking a difference of 46%.

The average earnings of foreign born Canada PR graduates was around $120,000 after 13 years of completing their studies whereas the same for Canada-born graduates ranged between $100,000-$120,000.Upon analyzing the difference in earnings between the two groups, the economists at the University of Waterloo concluded that higher earnings could be because of the rise in economic returns on technology and engineering degrees, which is the predominant focus of the University of Waterloo.
The economists also found out that nearly 70% of international students at the University of Waterloo have acquired Canada PR, which is two times the national average. These findings follow previous research conclusion which revealed that immigrant population show better economic and education outcomes than the natives.
