IRCC to launch new Canada family reunification system

IRCC will launch a revised Canada family reunification system said a Spokesperson of the Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada. The Government of Canada has announced in August 2018 that the controversial lottery system will be ended. It would be replaced by a system of quotas. 20, 500 Grandparents and Parents would be admitted in 2019 which is an increase from 17,000 in 2017, it added.

The application period for the renewed Canada family reunification system is likely to commence at the end of January. The IRCC Spokesperson said that a post has been updated on the social media on December 31, 2018. It says that the applications will be again accepted soon, as quoted by the CIC News.

Ahmed Hussen the Immigration Minister of Canada explained the background due to which the program has been revamped. He said that negative feedback from Canadians was one among the reasons for scrapping the lottery system. He assured that the applicants will be offered adequate time prior to the acceptance of applications.

More than 95,000 people had filed applications during the 2017 lottery period. This was online and for bringing over their relatives to Canada. Just 10,000 prospective sponsors were chosen to submit complete applications in the end.

The opposition parties in Canada had expressed a fierce reaction over the lottery system. Michelle Rempel the Conservative immigration critic termed it as a complete abandonment of responsibility. Jenny Kwan of the NDP said that the lottery system was a failure right from the beginning.

Huge backlogs of applications have flooded the Canada family reunification system for many years. The backlog in 2011 was up to 167, 000 applications. IRCC statistics have revealed that the numbers have been reduced to 26,000 applications in June 2018.

IRCC has also said that the processing times have been decreased significantly. Most of the applications are being processed in just 2 years. This is a decrease from 8 years just 3 years back.
