Stay alert against scams with these safety rules given by the Canadian government

Scammers in Canada target people through various fraudulent methods, it is crucial to be aware these activities and report them.

Beware of impersonators posing as Government officials

One of the main scams involves individuals posing as the staff of Canadian government. They call people and use fear tactics by saying they have committed errors in paperwork and owe fees, and also threaten the person may lose immigration status or deported.

It is essential to remember that IRCC will never contact you by phone for fee collection, won’t use aggressive tactics or threaten to harm or damage, request personal or financial information, will not try to hurry you up into paying any fees right away, ask you to pay fee from prepaid credit cards.

Recognizing and ignoring fake emails

Another most common fraudulent activity is by targeting individuals through fake emails, which involves asking you to invest money or disclose personal information of your bank accounts.

The advice is to just delete such emails and not to respond. Additionally, caution is to be taken for emails from strangers that direct to websites asking personal information. Do not ever provide any personal information to such mails or websites.

Fake computer virus threats

Scammers may contact via emails or phone calls claiming there is virus on your computer and offering to remove it in a motive to get your passwords and personal information.

The advice is to never allow any stranger to access your computer. Computer issues should only be handled by experts or with antivirus software purchased from the trusted sources.

Avoid falling for fake prize scams

Fraudulent messages or calls claiming that you have won unexpected money are tactics used by these fraudsters even when you did not participate in any contest.

Such texts should be deleted and you should never fill any forms asking for personal information. If the message asks you to reply with “NO” or “STOP”, avoid doing so as these scammers might use that information to confirm if it is your phone number.
