As per the Anholt-Ipsos Nation Brands Index, Canada ranks third in the world among 50 countries. Only top-ranking Germany and France are ranked above Canada. From the fifth place in 2018, Canada moves up to third place in 2019.
The rankings were based on online interviews conducted with 20,035 adults over the age of 18 in more than 20 countries.
Canada took first place in three of the six categories that were used to rank the 50 countries. These categories were immigration and investment, people and governance. Canada was also the only country in the top 5 to improve its ranking on culture, governance and tourism.
This is the second consecutive year that Canada has been ranked first for immigration and investment.
Five blended attributes were considered for the immigration and investment score:
Vadim Volos, the lead researcher, emailed a statement to CIC News. It stated that the Immigration and Investment Index assesses a country’s power to attract capital and talent. It is not measured only by whether people who like to live, work and study in the country but also by the country’s impression of equality of opportunity, economic prosperity and high quality of life.
Surveyed participants were also asked to give “personality traits” to the 50 countries.
39% of the participants considered Canada as “friendly”. 30% considered the country “trustworthy” and 29% considered it “happy”. 19% of the participants considered Canada “generous”.
In his statement, Volos said that a country’s brand could not be built overnight. A nation can only feature among the top 5 only if there is consistency in its image.
