Abstract: Australia has announced new policies for candidates in the skilled migration category.

The government of Australia has announced changes in the immigration policies for candidates in the Skilled Migration category.

As per the update, the candidates will be eligible to apply for visas through the category of General Skilled Migration if they have a skill assessment report of their nominated occupation. They are required to apply under 60 days of being issued the invitation to apply for the visa.

It is good news for candidates who did not fulfill the eligibility criteria due to a lack of skills assessment reports.

Changed Policies for Candidates in Skilled Migration of Australia

Earlier, if the candidate received an invitation to submit an application for skills assessment, and the validity of the report expired before they received the invitation, they were not able to submit a  valid application.

According to the new advisory, the updated policies permit the candidates to apply for the visa even if their skills assessment has expired when they receive an invitation. The Department offers 60 days to acquire a valid skills assessment.

Who requires a skills assessment?

The international professionals in the following points-tested GSM or General Skilled Migration visas are required to have skills assessment for the nominated occupations:

• Skilled Independent visa (subclass 189)
• Skilled Nominated visa (subclass 190)
• Skilled Regional (provisional) visa (subclass 489)
• Skilled Work Regional (provisional) visa (subclass 491)

To be eligible for an invitation, the candidate must be nominated in an occupation listed on the relevant skilled occupation list for that particular visa subclass.

The candidates are required to submit evidence to demonstrate that they have a suitable skills assessment for the occupation they have applied for at the time of registering their application.

Obtaining a skills assessment

The candidates need to contact the concerned assessing authority for their eligible nominated occupation. The candidates are advised to obtain their skills assessment before they plan to submit their EOI or Expression of Interest in SkillSelect. They should note that each assessing authority has its customized procedures, fees, and timeframes.
