Canada’s youngest province, Newfoundland and Labrador is all set to take in 1,700 new immigrants this year. Thus, it may surpass the immigration target set for 2022 this year itself.
In 2017, N&L announced that they would welcome 50% more immigrants every year by 2022. They based their figures on the rate of immigration of 2015. N&L welcomed 1,122 Permanent Residents to the province in 2015. This meant that they needed to admit 600 more newcomers to the province in the subsequent year to meet the target.
N&L saw the number of applications double from 2018 to 2019. The increase in the applications can be attributed to N&L’s participation in the 5-year Atlantic Immigration Pilot Program. The AIPP was launched in 2017, as per CIC News.
However, as the number of applications has increased, so has the backlog of applications. Since late May, the processing times have increased significantly due to the backlog.
The Govt. of N&L plans to rethink their 5-year strategy to accommodate the influx of new immigrants to the province. As per data from Statistics Canada, 51% of all the new immigrants to N&L stayed in the province from 2011 to 2016.
The province expects to improve its declining population through immigration. The current population of N&L stands at 525,000.
