Nova Scotia’s population at an all-time high due to record immigration

Record immigration has driven Nova Scotia's population to an all-time high. On October 1, 2019, the population of Nova Scotia stood at 976,768. This record growth in population has been attributed to a large extent to immigrants that have chosen to settle down in the province. The growth of 1.28% is the fastest population increase in any 12-month period since 1972.

 

Nova Scotia is one of the four original provinces – along with Ontario, Quebec, and New Brunswick – that together formed the Dominion of Canada in 1867.

 

With its capital at Halifax, Nova Scotia is located on the eastern seaboard of North America. Nova Scotia has 7,400+ kilometers of coastline.

 

Incidentally, the province’s present name, Nova Scotia, means “New Scotland” in Latin. This can be traced back to the brief Scottish claims to the province in the distant past.

According to an estimation by Statistics Canada, the population of Nova Scotia grew by 12,339 in the period between October 1, 2018 to October 1, 2019. This is inclusive of the 7,165 immigrants that have come to Nova Scotia in this 12-month period.

The third quarter of 2019 alone saw the population of Nova Scotia increasing by 5,373, of which 2,471 were immigrants. The population growth in the period between July 1 – October 1, 2019 is also a record for a 3-months' stretch.
