A new Indian consulate will be opened in Marseille, France, on February 12, 2024, by the Indian Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, and French President Emmanuel Macron. The announcement of a new consulate in France was made in 2023 during one of the PM’s trips. Marseille, a city in France, is one of the entry points for the India-Middle East Economic Corridor (IMEEC) for Europe.
The port of Marseille-Fos, or the Marseille Port, is said to be one of the largest ports in the Mediterranean and France. A majority of France’s imports and exports of goods between Europe, Asia, the Middle East, and Africa are held here. The Fos-sur-Mer also has an oil terminal that helps with importing oil to France from other countries. The new Consulate aims to support the consular services while also reducing the journey to the French capital for consular work.
It is anticipated that PM Modi and Emmanuel Macron will also visit the Mazargues Cemetery as part of the visit to honor around 900 Indian soldiers who fought in World War I.
