The president of Portugal, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, approved changes to be made to the immigration laws of the country. The changes will be made to make the recruitment process easy so as to meet the problem of labor shortage in the country.
The proposal for the reform was approved in the parliament on July 21 and it has been proposed that the new law will become effective within a few days. According to this reform, candidates who want to work in Portugal will get a temporary visa whose validity will be 120 days. The visa can be extended for 60 more days. The new law will also provide the facility of digital nomad as it will provide facilities to the remote workers.
The new law will help the sectors that are facing the problem of labor shortage. Some of these sectors include civil construction, hospitality, and tourism. The hospitality industry was massively impacted by the COVID pandemic. According to the report of IMF 2020, tourism sector in Portugal was much impacted and there is a need of 50,000 workers in this industry.
The council of ministers in Spain have also decided to make changes in their immigration laws so that recruitment of foreign workers can be made easy. This will help in reducing the labor shortage in different sectors like tourism, transportation, and civil construction.
