Japan has the most powerful passport worldwide and retains the #1 position on the recently released 2021 Henley Passport Index. A Japanese passport holder can access 191 destinations globally without the requirement of acquiring a visa.

As per Henley & Partners, the Asian Pacific region is projected as being the first region to emerge from the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Henley Passport Index is an original ranking of all the passports in the world. Countries are ranked on the index as per the total number of destinations that the holder of that specific passport can travel to without a prior passport.

The latest results from the Henley Passport Index provides noteworthy insights into the future of travel freedom in a world following the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic.

As per a Press Release by Henley & Partners, “The ascendance of APAC countries in the Henley Passport Index rankings is a relatively new phenomenon.” In the 16-year history of the Henley Passport Index, the top spots were traditionally taken up by EU countries, the UK, or the US.

India is ranked #85 on the 2021 Henley Passport Index, sharing the spot with Tajikistan. There are 58 countries worldwide than an individual holding an Indian passport can travel to without the requirement of getting a prior visa.

The unprecedented and unexpected events of 2020 have combined to reinforce the various “pull factors” – such as safety, access to quality healthcare and education, stability – that make various individuals from diverse backgrounds to cross borders for a better future.
