Punjab and Alberta, Canada to sign immigration MOU

Immigration MOU - Memorandum of Understanding will be signed by Punjab state in India and Alberta province in Canada. This is to streamline the process of immigration application for students. It will be signed on 7 February 2019. This is to simplify the immigration of youth from Punjab to Canada.

A meeting in this regard was held between Christopher Kerr and Charanjit Singh Channi. They are the Immigration Minister of Canada and Punjab Employment Generation, Industrial Training and Technical Education respectively.

Channi said that the immigration MOU will assist students in Punjab aspiring to immigrate to Canada for studies. They will be saved from being cheated by fake agents, he added, as quoted by the Times of India.

The immigration affairs of India, Bhutan, and Nepal are looked after by Kerr. He was also accompanied by Managing Director, Government of Alberta Rahul Sharma.

The delegation from Canada conducted discussions with the Minister of Technical Education in the attendance of higher officials of Government of Punjab. This included Technical Education Secretary, Employment Generation Director, and Skill Development Advisor. The Vice-chancellors of Technical University Punjab Maharaja Ranjit Singh (MRSPTU), Bathinda, and Inder Kumar Gujral Technical University Punjab, Jalandhar was also present.

The meeting discussed diverse issues related to Canadian immigration from Punjab. It included launching a portal by Punjab government for students and aspiring immigrants to Canada. Assistance for skills development for obtaining overseas jobs was also discussed.

The delegates of both nations also discussed regarding programs in Canadian Universities and Colleges. The way in which the Government of Canada would support the initiatives of the Government of Punjab was also discussed.
