Australia is planning major changes to their immigration program. The Global Talent Independent [GTI] program is expected to feature prominently in the COVID-19 induced shake-up.
The GTI is the fastest route to get permanent residency in Australia.
The Global Talent Independent Program of the Australian government is also referred to as the Global Talent Visa Program. Offering a streamlined visa pathway, the GTI program is for highly skilled professionals that wish to work as well as live permanently in Australia.
For 2019-20, the GTI program had an allocation of 5,000 spaces.
Seeking the “brightest and best global talent”, the GTI pathway of Australia specifically targets 7 future-focused sectors. These are –
Quantum Information, Advanced Digital, Data Science and ICT |
Space and Advanced Manufacturing |
AgTech |
Cyber Security |
MedTech |
FinTech |
Energy and Mining Technology |
In order to be granted a visa under Australia’s Global Talent Visa Program, a candidate will be required to be highly skilled in any 1 of the 7 target sectors above-mentioned. The individual will also be required to have the ability for attracting a salary meeting the high income threshold.
Aimed at aiding the growth of innovation and tech economies in Australia, the GTI program creates opportunities for Australians through the creation of jobs, transfer of skills, and promotion of innovation.
Possessing entrepreneurial ideas along with cutting-edge skills within any of the 7 target sectors is a pre-requisite in order to be eligible for the GTI program.
Launched in November 2019, the Global Talent Independent [GTI] stream, even despite the COVID-19 situation, has almost achieved its 2019-20 target of 5,000.
As per reports, it is expected that the 5,000 ceiling might be lifted when the Morrison government resets the permanent immigration cap in the October budget.
Owing to the impact of COVID-19, while some Australian visa subclasses might have faced a certain level of stagnation, the GTI visas continued unaffected. This was in keeping with Ministerial Direction 85 enabling Australia’s Department of Home Affairs to give priority processing to Distinguished Talent visas [subclasses 124 and 858] for supporting a prompt processing for applicants found to be “highly desirable by Government”.
The GTI program provides a new pathway – by invitation – to Distinguished Talent visas [subclasses 124 and 858].
The Australian Immigration Minister David Coleman has hinted at a bigger focus on the Global Talent Independent visa in the post-coronavirus scenario.
