If you are a US PR and your 10-year Green Card is expired or about to expire in the next six months, you may apply for its renewal by:

1. Filing the Form I-90 This is an application to replace the PR card.
2. Filing a paper-based Form I-90. This is an application to replace the PR card by mail.

How can you renew your Green Card if you are outside the USA?

If you are outside the US, you would need to apply for the Green Card as soon as you return to the US. You would need to return to the US within 1 year of your departure from the USA and before the Green Card expires.

If you are outside the US and your Green Card has expired then you need to contact the nearest US consulate. Only then should you proceed to file the Form I-90 to renew your Green Card.

When should you renew your Green Card?

You should renew your Green Card if it expires or will expire in the next 6 months. If you are a PR, you may file the Form I-551 to do the same, as per The Guardian.

How can you check the status of your Green Card?

You may check the status of your Green Card application on the USCIS website under “My Case Status”. You may also call the USCIS contact centre.

What can you do if your Green Card application is denied?

In case your Green Card application is rejected, you will receive a letter telling you why it was denied. Appealing a negative outcome is not allowed. However, you may submit a motion to reconsider the decision at the same office. By submitting this motion you may request USCIS to reexamine the decision.

What versions of Green Card are no longer valid?

The USCIS Form AR-103, Form AR-3, and Form I-151 are no longer valid. You will need to replace them with the current US Green Card.
