Sweden to implement New Changes to the EU Blue Card

The government of Sweden will be introducing new rules for the EU Blue Card to facilitate a application process for highly skilled foreign workers. The Swedish parliament will be receiving a text on the proposed changes on November 27, 2024. The proposal will be voted upon on November 28, 2024.

The new changes will be implemented on January 01, 2025 upon approval. The most important change to be introduced will be lowering the salary requirement for EU Blue Card applicants to 1.25 times of the gross average salary in Sweden.

Major changes to Sweden's EU Blue Card in 2025

The following are the major changes to be implemented to the EU Blue Card in 2025:

  • The minimum income requirement will be lowered from €5,165 to €4,304 per year, which is 1.25 times the gross average salary in the country.
  • The length of the employment contract for EU Blue Card applicants will be reduced to six months from the current length of one year.
  • The EU Blue Card application process will be simplified for candidates who have acquired an EU Blue Card from any other EU country and are willing to apply for an EU Blue Card in Sweden.
  • Candidates who have acquired an EU Blue Card from any other EU country will be allowed to work in Sweden for up to 90 days in a 180-day period.

Reduced processing time for EU Blue Card in Sweden

According to recent news, Sweden reduced EU Blue card processing times to 30 days from the earlier processing time of 90 days. This move aims to attract and retain more foreign workers in Sweden.

Around 89,037 EU Blue Card applications were granted by Sweden and other EU countries in 2023. Indians were the major beneficiaries of EU Blue Card in 2023, closely followed by Russians and Turks.
