Significant Changes to Salary Threshold In Sweden

The average monthly salary in Sweden has been increased to Rs. 3,00,000 as of June 18, 2024. Based on this figure, the new salary requirement for work permit applicants has been set at Rs. 2,25,000 per month.

The Government of Sweden plans to increase the salary threshold further to 100% of the average monthly salary in Sweden. The further rise in salary requirement is expected to be implemented by June 01, 2025. Certain workers are to be exempted from the new salary threshold to ensure that the updated rules are equitable and that various sections of workers are considered.

The Swedish government also plans to allow a one-year grace period for renewal applicants. During the grace period, the present rule of 80% of the average monthly salary will apply for renewal applications. The one-year grace period will end on June 1, 2026, so that work permit holders can get sufficient time to adjust to the new threshold.

The new salary threshold is applicable for all fresh work permit applicants as well as renewal applications submitted on or after June 18, 2024. The new change does not apply to applications that are already in process.

Sweden work permit applicants must also make sure that their salaries comply with the industry standards or collective bargaining agreements. Besides meeting the minimum salary criteria, the salary should also meet the specific salary standards of their job sector.
