Switzerland

With effect from 1st October 2019, Switzerland will add Georgia to its list of “safe” countries. As per the Foreign Affairs Minister of Georgia, Switzerland becomes the 15th country in the EU to make such a decision for Georgia.

Georgia is a beautiful country which lies at the intersection of West Asia and East Europe. Russia lies to the north of Georgia while the west is bounded by the Black Sea. To the south are Armenia and Turkey and Azerbaijan lies to the southeast. The capital is Tbilisi which also happens to be the largest city in the country.

Getting added to the list of safe countries signifies the political stability of Georgia. It is also an indicator of its economic development and how much the country respects and protects human rights.

This decision will help accelerate the consideration for asylum applications which are filed by Georgian nationals. The Federal Council of Switzerland has reported that there has been an increase in the number of Georgian citizens seeking asylum since 2017. This relates the issue to the lifting of the visa regime with member states of the Schengen Zone, as per Georgia Today.

Apart from Switzerland, the following countries have also added Georgia to the list of safe countries:

  • Slovenia
  • Czech Republic
  • Bulgaria
  • Denmark
  • Estonia
  • Belgium
  • Austria
  • Cyprus
  • France
  • Bulgaria
  • Lichtenstein
  • Netherlands
  • Ireland
  • Luxembourg
  • Iceland
