Italy-India Migration and Mobility Agreement

The Union Cabinet, which includes senior ministers selected by the Prime Minister, has granted the retrospective consent for India to formally sign and ratify the Migration and Mobility Agreement with Italy. This agreement has been signed by Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani and External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar.

 

The agreement makes efforts to enhance mobility pathways through Youth Mobility agreements beyond the student and worker mobility pathways and is anticipated to bring 1000s of Indians to the country in the coming years.

Italy has become a popular destination for Indians due to improved conditions and increased opportunities.

According to data from the Ministry of External Affairs, Indian community in Italy has grown significantly, comprising 45,357 Persons of Indian Origin (PIO) and 157,695 non-resident Indians (NRIs).

Details of the Italy-India Bilateral Agreement

 

The objective of this agreement is to build strong connections and encourage mobility between India and Italy among students, business professionals, skilled workers, and young talent.

 

Indian students after completing their academic or vocational training will now be able to reside temporarily in Italy for up to 12 months and gain professional experience.

 

Providing internships, professional training and post-study options will strengthen the existing structure of Italian visa by putting India in a favorable position in the present labor mobility pathways.

 

To ensure effective implementation, a joint working committee is created to oversee and monitor the agreement, enhancing accountability and transparency for this project between Italy and India.

Quotas for seasonal and non-seasonal workers

The agreement allocates quotas for non-seasonal and seasonal Indian workers for 2023, 2024, 2025. With this, Indian workers will have increased chances to join the Italian labor force.
