The reasoning behind the Best Communities ranking by Maclean’s remains that “while there are many intangible things that determine quality of life that can’t be quantified and measured, a lot of tangible things can be.” This is the inaugural edition of the ranking of Canadian communities by Maclean’s.

For the 2021 Rankings, data on 415 communities across Canada was collected and compared based on specific categories that were considered to hold the most importance for an average individual. With a subsequent change in priorities and remote working coming into the mainstay in view of the COVID-19 pandemic, some categories were accordingly streamlined by Maclean’s. While recognizing the fact that different things are important to different people, Maclean's nonetheless has allotted greater weightage to categories that might be most important to average people.
