In a major change in policy, Labor party has said that it supports that UK must remain in EU single market in transition as the UK prepares for EU exit. The Labor party’s Brexit spokesman Keir Starmer was quoted in The Observer that Labor seeks a transitional deal that maintains the status-quo with the EU. This means that UK remains in the EU single market and customs union during this period, said Starmer.
Keir Starmer further elaborated that this implies that UK would adhere to common rules of both the EU and UK implying that EU immigration would continue unhindered. These comments mark a crucial change of policy for the Labor party. It had earlier been unclear on EU single market and membership of customs union, as quoted by the Indian Express.
Labor party is in a powerful position after the snap general elections held in the UK in June. It had stripped the Tories of their majority in the UK Parliament. The Tories also had to form a coalition government with the help of Democratic Unionist Party in Northern Ireland.
Even as the Labor party unveiled it’s changed approach a source in the UK government said that the EU must not delay Brexit negotiations now. When it comes to resolving areas of disagreement, both the sides must be flexible and accept compromise, added the source.
Just days ahead of the fresh round of talks for UK’s EU exit at Brussels the UK has echoed the EU statement that clock is ticking and both sides must not drag feet. UK’s Brexit ministry has also called upon the EU Commission to be more flexible as the UK negotiators stress for future trade ties.
