The UK will check India’s response to its immigration plans for post-Brexit period unveiled in December last year. UK Home officials will meet their Indian counterparts and others in this regards. They will discuss the immigration White Paper announced by Sajid Javid Home Secretary. This was informed by a senior official of the FCO - Foreign and Commonwealth Office.
The immigration plans unveiled by the UK are aimed at creating a level playing field for workers from the EU and outside the EU. The immigration opportunities will be based on skills and not the origin-destination of the workers.
As we finalize the immigration rules, it is crucial for us to get a clear picture of the perception of the Indian government, students in India and others said the FCO official. We believe that the nature of talks that will be held are exceptional at this stage. It highlights the significance offered by the UK for setting right its ties with India, added the official.
The immigration plans include eliminating the existing yearly cap on the allocation of Tier-2 Visa numbers for skilled workers. It is also proposed to do away with the requirement for employers. This is for attempting to find local workers in the UK prior to overseas recruitment.
The UK Government also proposes to permit overseas students a time of 6 months to find permanent skilled work after graduation. They can work provisionally during this period. Ph.D. students will be given 1 year for this, as quoted by the Hindu Businessline.
The UK has said that it will also hold consultations regarding the salary ceiling for Skilled Visas. This has been subject to much debate in the nation.
