The USCIS has recently announced that the validity period of the US Green Card will be extended for renewal applicants. The current validity for Green Card renewal applicants is 36 months instead of 24 months, which was kept earlier. Changes have been effective since September 10, 2024.
Under the new changes, legal permanent residents who file the I-90 Form requesting a renewal of their US green Card will be eligible for this extension. This move aims to help legal permanent residents maintain their status while waiting for their US green Card to be renewed.
The language on Form I-90 has been updated to reflect the new changes. The USCIS has also started to print changed receipt notices for applicants with pending Form I-90. Renewal applicants with an expired Green card can schedule an appointment at a USCIS Field Office or contact USCIS to retain their status as permanent residents.
