The plan of the government for the safe opening of Greek tourism in 2021 was recently presented by the Minister of Tourism Haris Theocharis.

The Minister was speaking at a Press Conference – entitled "Return to Greece: The journey to revive a unique experience has just begun" – given in the framework of the international Tourism Exhibition ITB Berlin.

May 14, 2021 has been announced as the date for “the official start of the 2021 tourist season in Greece”.

The central slogan for the new promotional campaign for Greek Tourism was also revealed as “All you want is Greece”.

The press conference was broadcast worldwide via the Internet, online with the Acropolis Museum.

As pointed out by the Minister of Tourism, Greek Tourism is to be opened on May 14, keeping in mind the “faithful implementation of the health protocols”.

While gradually lifting the restrictions, Greece plans for April 2021 a pilot implementation of the planned measures. The first phase is to be with the visitors coming to Greece from European Union countries, as well as other countries of departure where the COVID-19 vaccination has progressed.

Nevertheless, Minster Harry Theoharis has categorically stated, “I stress, however, that all opening dates are indicative and may change depending on developments”.

From May 14, 2021, the following travelers might enterGreece for the purposes of tourism –

·         That had been vaccinated

·         Those who had immunity due to recovery

·         Had tested negative for COVID-19 in a recent test

All tourists to Greece will be subjected to random tests as conducted by Greece in the previous year. However, a significant difference as compared to the last year is that of the ‘rapid’ tests whereby quarantine for those tested might begin “now, without the 24-hour wait like in 2020”.

As per the official statement, “The cost of hospitalization or any other required action, aimed at protecting the health of tourists, professionals and citizens, will be borne by the Greek State.”

By February 22, 2021, over 725,000 citizens were already vaccinated against COVID-19, making Greece one of the leading countries to vaccinate most of its population.

Ending his speech at the Press Conference, the Minister of Tourism Haris Theocharis stated that “to the unrivaled advantages that Greece has as a tourist destination, we add our commitment to offer and guarantee that every tourist who chooses our country in 2021 will be completely safe”.
