Canada has a long history of welcoming immigrants and facilitating their integration into Canadian society.
A look at the influx of immigrants in the country since 2001 indicates that it is between 221,352 and 262,236 immigrants per annum.
Canada announced in its immigration plans in March this year to invite 341,000 immigrants in 2020, an additional 351,000 in 2021, and welcome another 361,000 immigrants in 2022. It plans to invite one million migrants to the country by 2022.
Immigration is a major driver of Canada's rise in population. Canada attracts far more per capita immigrants than the United States. In comparison, natural population growth accounts for just about one-tenth of the total population rise in Canada per year. More than 22 percent of Canadians identify themselves as immigrants.
Why does Canada have so many immigrants?
There are three major reasons:
The social component – The country accepts immigrants who have family members already living in Canada
The humanitarian component – Canada has an open policy to accept refugees and asylum seekers if they meet the eligibility requirements
The economic component – The country encourages immigrants to work and to settle in the country
Which countries do Canada’s immigrants come from?
Out of the record 341,000 immigrants who arrived in Canada in 2019, 25 percent of them belonged to India. Around 86,000 Indians got their permanent residence in 2019. Following India was China which contributed to 9 percent of immigrants the Philippines was next which accounted for 8 percent. The other two countries in the top 5 nations were Nigeria and the US.
India’s share of immigrants to Canada has increased significantly over the years. The country’s share was only 14 percent in 2014. Today, India has become Canada’s leading source of immigrants owing to the following reasons:
Canada welcomes immigrants from 175 countries
Canada is perhaps the world's most accessible immigrant country, accepting refugees from 175 countries each year. This is large because, in 1967, Canada was the first nation to introduce an objective, point-based program of economic class immigration.
Canada has seen substantial diversification of its immigrant source countries since the introduction of the points-based system.
Canada's program of economic-class immigration does not recognize the country of origin of an applicant. Further, there are no quotas per nation in place in Canada. As long as candidates meet the eligibility requirements, the country welcomes them with open arms.
