Abstract: Australia plans to revise the working hours available to international students studying there for the right balance between study and work.

Australia plans to implement revised working hours for international students pursuing their education in the country. The number of working hours will be capped for international students.

The unrestricted work schedule for holders of Australian student visa will be effective till June 30, 2023.

Capped Working Hours for International Students in Australia

From July 1, 2023, the revised working hours for international students in Australia will be implemented. The number of working hours will be set with respect to the optimum balance between study and work.

In January 2022, the government of Australia relaxed the restrictions on working hours temporarily, for student visa holders to resolve the shortages in the Australian workforce.

Before the rules were relaxed, international students could work for 40 hours every fortnight.

Extension of Post-Study Work Rights

In September 2022, Australia announced that it would be broadening the post-study work rights for foreign students in industries facing skills shortages. The post-study work rights allows foreign national students in Australia to stay back in Australia after their graduation and look for employment.

The government of Australia has not announced the degrees eligible for the revision, but as per the reports, engineering, nursing, and IT graduates can avail of the new proposed changes.
