It takes just 2 weeks for a foreign tech worker in Silicon Valley to get an employment work permit from Canada. Getting an employment permit in the US can take months.
The Trump Govt. has increased the scrutiny on H1B visas and further plans to implement a ban on H4 visa holder from working in the US. Canada took this opportunity to aggressively suck out top tech workers from Silicon Valley and other such tech-rich regions of the US.
According to the Pew Research Center, employers in Dallas-Fort Worth use the most number of H1Bs. They received around 74,000 H1B visas between 2010 and 2016, as quoted by The Dallas News.
Experts say that Canada’s “Global Skills Strategy” Program which offers similar work permits as the H1B, is well suited to attract foreign tech workers to Toronto, Vancouver, or Montreal. Before the launch of this program, it took months to get Canada’s employment permit. Speeding up the visa process has definitely helped Canada attract some of the top tech talents in the world.
The Trump Government’s plan to overhaul the H1B has created a lot of uncertainty for many talented foreign tech workers.
Foreign tech workers, hence, are opting for the Canadian Permanent Residency which is similar to the US Green Card. Long wait-times for Green cards and uncertainty over US Visas was already causing a brain drain in the US long before the Trump Govt. However, experts say that the current US immigration climate has made Canada more attractive for many tech workers.
