Updated March 07 2024

With the Coronavirus pandemic, the job outlook in the UK has changed.

For instance, the growth in employment in hospitality, transportation, and business services has fallen while the job outlook in healthcare and public administration remains high. Before the pandemic, the sector with the most prominent job outlook was wholesale and retail trade, with an estimated 4.97 million jobs; the next largest sector was healthcare and social work, with 4.48 million jobs in March 2020.

Three months after the pandemic began in March, the sector showed the highest increase in jobs in the healthcare sector, with 2.7 vacancies per 100 employee jobs.

The wholesale and retail trade sectors have seen a decline in the number of jobs in the past three months with the closure of non-essential retail establishments to follow social distancing rules.

As for the job outlook in the UK for 2022, the Employment Outlook Survey by the Manpower group shows a net employment outlook of –6% for the first quarter of 2022.

According to the survey, only 49% of organizations in the UK expect their hiring to return to pre-pandemic levels in the next 12 months.

The survey of 1,300 employers found that, amid signs of a pick-up in recruiting intentions in finance and construction, more expected to shed jobs than add new workers during the first three months of 2022.

According to Mark Cahill, ManpowerGroup UK’s managing director, “The headline numbers are steadily moving in the right direction, and we are seeing a continued resurgence in key sectors like finance and business, giving us reasons to be cheerful as we head into 2022. However, despite this positive trajectory, the UK remains the least optimistic in Europe, with continued uncertainty over Brexit and the effects of a second Covid-19 wave still looming large.”

Sector-wise outlook

According to the survey, the employment outlook in finance and business services has increased. The adoption of remote working has led to strong demand for personnel in the business admin, HR, and management fields.

Here are the salary details of the top sectors for 2022

Occupation Average annual  salary

Information technology 71,300 pounds
Banking 77,200 pounds

Job market outlook 2022

Even though the number of job openings is lesser than in 2019 due to the impact of the Coronavirus pandemic, there are still a considerable number of jobs available for those with the required qualifications.
