The German Resident Return Visa is meant for German residents who have either lost their German Resident Permit or the Permit has expired. This visa allows German residents to re-enter Germany with the status of a permanent resident and is, therefore, also known as a German re-entry visa. If your German resident Permit were lost or expired while you were outside the country, you would be required to apply for a re-entry visa to enter Germany as a legal immigrant.
