What is the EU Settlement Scheme?

The EU Settlement Scheme (EUSS) was launched in 2019 to protect the right to live in the UK before the end of the Brexit transition period. The scheme is designed to help residents who have lived in the UK for 5 years maintain their ‘settled’ status after the UK left the European Union on January 31, 2020, with a transition period that ended on December 31, 2020.

Candidates in the UK for five years can provide proof of their application of 'settled status' and get a UK Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR) via this scheme. The EU Settlement Scheme offers family members of UK residents willing to maintain their settled status in the UK can apply for the EU Settlement Scheme. The EU Settlement Scheme allows you to work or study in the UK without restrictions.

Eligibility Criteria for the EU Settlement Scheme

You would be eligible to apply for the EU Settlement Scheme if you:

  • Are a citizen or relative of an EU, Switzerland, Norway, Iceland, or Liechtenstein national
  • Have been living in the UK before December 31, 2020
  • Are a relative of a UK resident who has lived in the UK before December 31, 2020

Note: Candidates applying for an EU Settlement Scheme for a family member must apply for the EU Settlement Scheme Family Permit to bring them to the UK.
 

Requirements for the EU Settlement Scheme

The following are the documents required to apply for an EU Settlement Scheme:

  • A valid and original passport
  • Valid Photo IDs
  • Irish citizenship certificate
  • British naturalization certificate or registration certificate
  • Biometric residence card (BRC) or biometric residence permit (BRP)
  • Documents to prove continuous residence in the UK
  • Relationship proof
  • Documents to prove your identity and civil status
     

How to apply for the EU Settlement Scheme?

The steps to apply for the EU Settlement Scheme are as follows:

Step 1: Check your eligibility for the EU Settlement Scheme

Step 2: Gather the documents required

Step 3: Fill out the application form online

Step 4: Wait for a decision

Step 5: Fly to the UK

Note: The UK is not accepting applications for the EU Settlement Scheme after June 30. 2021. However, you might be able to apply if you have "reasonable grounds" to do so after the deadline.

The EU Settlement Scheme (EUSS) is free to apply, and there is no application fee or biometric fee to be paid by the applicants.
