Universität Hamburg, or the University of Hamburg (in English), or UHH is a public university located in Hamburg, Germany. It was founded in 1919 by merging the Hamburg Colonial Institute, Hamburgisches Kolonialinstitut in German, the Academic College, Akademisches Gymnasium in German, and the General Lecture System, Allgemeines Vorlesungswesen in German. Its main campus is housed in the central district of Rotherbaum.

The University of Hamburg comprises more than 180 properties spread all over Hamburg. It houses more than 44,180 students, with around 15% of them being foreign nationals.
The University of Hamburg offers more than 170 academic programs in different disciplines. All bachelor’s programs have German only as their medium of instruction while some master’s programs are provided in the English language.
According to the Times Higher Education (THE) Rankings 2021, UHH was ranked #135 globally, while the Webometrics Ranking of World Universities placed it #140 globally.
UHH offers more than 70 bachelor’s and 100 master’s programs in eight faculties of business administration, business, education; law, economics & social science, humanities, informatics & natural science, mathematics, medicine, and psychology & human movement. It offers MBA in only one specialization of Health Management.

The University of Hamburg does not offer on-campus accommodation. There are, however, many accommodation options off-campus.
The types of off-campus accommodations available for students of UHH are as follows. The Student Association of Hamburg manages student residences by partnering with the University of Hamburg.
In these residences, 24 residence halls are provided to house 4,200 students and their base rents are €230 per month. They have a furnished bedroom, a living room, a shared kitchen, and a bathroom, which is shared by 10 to 15 individuals. To get these housing options, students need to apply a minimum of three months before their scheduled date of joining.
There are also flatshares where an option is provided to share an apartment with other inhabitants. The base cost of these is €400 per month and can rise based on the demand.
Foreign students enrolling in both bachelor’s and master’s programs can apply directly through the website of the University of Hamburg. Applications for international master’s programs are accepted between mid-February 15 and March end.

Foreign students need to pay €328 as semester contribution fees even if they are on a leave for a semester. Students applying for several semesters of leave consecutively can pay a decreased amount of €278.

Foreign students pursuing degree programs at UHH can apply for two types of scholarships. They are Degree Completion Grant and Merit Scholarship.
Merit scholarships are granted to foreign students and doctoral students belonging to all branches who participate socially and interculturally. The scholarships are granted for a period of two semesters or one year. Students are allowed to reapply for them in the following year after their fund’s expiry date. An individual student can apply for this scholarship for up to three years.
The funding amount per month for doctoral students is €1,000 and for others, it is €850. Eligible for these scholarships are students of master’s who have completed one semester at the University of Hamburg.
Foreign students are informed about the decision of the selection committee six to eight weeks after the expiry of application deadlines. They make the decision based on the students’ academic performances, their involvement in social activities, and financial circumstances.
Degree Completion Grants are given only to those foreign students who are nearing the completion of their education at UHH. The funds are given for a period of twelve months to postgraduate students. The funding amount of these grants ranges from €200 to €720 depending upon their financial background.
The decision to award these grants depends upon the financial circumstances of the students and they are informed about their eligibility four weeks after the application of their deadlines.
Other funding options that foreign students can avail of include fellowships, part-time assignments, loans, government funding, etc.
