The University of Lausanne, also known as UNIL, is located on the outskirts of the city of Lausanne, on a campus on the shores of Lake Geneva, in the French-speaking region of Switzerland.
Founded in 1537 as a Protestant theological academy, it became a full-fledged university in 1890, making it the second oldest Swiss university.
The campus was moved from Lausanne's old city area to its current location in Dorigny in 1970.
It is located amidst scenic environs and is well connected by public transport network to other regions of the canton of Vaud, which is known for its cultural events.
It houses nearly 15,000 students, of whom more than 3,250 hail from foreign countries.
Besides its main campus, the University of Lausanne also has other sites in Bugnon, Épalinges, and Prilly.
UNIL houses seven faculties in Arts, Biology and Medicine, Business and Economics, Geosciences and Environment, Law, Criminal Justice and Public Administration, Social and Political Sciences, and Theology and Religious Studies.
It also comprises other schools and departments, such as the School of Criminal Justice (ESC), the School of French as a Foreign Language, French summer and winter courses, and the Science-Society Interface.
As the University of Lausanne encourages an interdisciplinary approach, it accommodates 190 research units and various continuing education courses.
In addition to academics, students can access various sporting activities at its Sports Centre. It has its own cultural program, where student associations organize exhibitions, movies, and theatre activities. Furthermore, Lausanne has a vibrant cultural atmosphere and a lively nightlife.
To gain admission to Bachelor's courses, applicants should have diplomas of secondary education, which are equivalent to a Swiss secondary school-leaving diploma, known as maturité, by completing 12 years of schooling.
To gain admission to a Master's program, they should have a Bachelor's degree from a Swiss university or any other foreign university which is considered equivalent to it.
Candidates who have a Bachelor's in one field and opt to do a Master's program in another field are admitted if they satisfy the condition of being up to the mark with the theoretical foundations before they commence studies.
As per QS World University Rankings, UNIL is ranked 220 globally, with all factors being taken into consideration.
