What is Italy Digital Nomad Visa?

Individuals looking to reside in Italy and work remotely are issued an Italy digital nomad visa. The digital nomad visa was first announced by the Italian government in 2022, and was officially launched on the 4th of April of the same year.  

 

This Italian digital nomad visa caters to non-EU citizens who are highly qualified and are either freelancers or other business owners. Individuals can work while staying in a different country and must apply for a residence permit within eight days of moving to Italy.

Italy Digital Nomad Visa Eligibility

• You must demonstrate an income of three times the minimum level required for exemption from participation in healthcare costs, equivalent to approximately €28,000 annually or about $30,400. (Approx. INR 30 Lakhs)
• You also need to provide evidence of health insurance coverage (for EUR 30,000) for the duration of their stay, proof of accommodation (Lease Agreement), and demonstrate a track record of at least six months as a remote worker or digital nomad.

 

Italy Digital Nomad Visa Requirements

• Holding a three-year Bachelor's degree or higher education qualification.
• Being a chartered professional, such as a doctor, lawyer, accountant, etc.
• Holding a superior professional qualification supported by at least five years of professional experience.
• Possessing a higher professional qualification in the IT industry, serving as a director or manager for at least three of the last seven years before applying for the visa.
• Work Experience: applicants must document at least six months of experience in the industry in which they intend to work remotely. More experience (up to five years) is required for applicants without a university degree.
• Work contract: remote workers must provide evidence of an existing employment contract, or a binding employment offer, requiring the employee to possess skills consistent with a higher level of education. The regulation does not say anything about proof of contracts for digital nomads. However, it is possible the Italian Consulate will ask for engagement letters, retainers, or other evidence of contracts between the freelancer and his/her clients with respect to the required high skills work.

• Passport-sized photos: Typically, two recent, colour passport-sized photographs. These must meet specific size and quality requirements.
