A former Mercyhurst University official Daniel Cabanillas has been charged with US Student Visa Fraud by the Federal investigation. Cabanillas is currently a Gannon employee and a renowned local singer. The investigation commenced after he was fired by the Mercyhurst University. This was for illegal use of the school credit card, said the prosecutor.
The investigation has revealed that Cabanillas had made use of a device for automatic signature. This was for falsifying the signature of a school official on an admissions letter for graduate school. He also filed fake details on the form as a part of the US Student Visa Fraud.
The above facts were admitted by Cabanillas and he pleaded guilty to a visa fraud felony count. This was in the 1 hour hearing before David S. Cercone the Senior US District Judge. He faces a maximum of 10 years in the jail at his hearing, as quoted by the Goerie. However, the federal guidelines for the sentencing call for 0 to 6 months in prison as per the data presented in the court.
Marshall Piccinini the Assistant US Attorney said that the Erie U.S. Attorney’s Office agreed to drop a second count of the felony. This was as a part of the plea agreement by Cabanillas for the US Student Visa Fraud.
The Assistant US Attorney also read to the court a brief of evidence of the government against Cabanillas. This is inclusive of a confession by him. He told the federal investigators about recalling alteration of acceptance letters. This was for many people inclusive of over a dozen students of Saudi Arabia.
Cabanillas has been charged with the submission of fake details on the Visa form in the case of 1 student. He has been identified as H.V in 2014 December and 2015 January in the documents of the court.
Daniel Cabanillas was employed at the Mercyhurst University as the student exchange visitor program’s designated school official. This was at the time of filing the false details as per the indictment. The court documents reveal that Cabanillas was terminated by the University in 2015 February. He was indicted in 2017 December.
The investigation in the work of Cabanillas in the Student Visas was informed to the court by Piccinini. This commenced after the University discovered the usage of a school credit card. It was for booking a trip to Mexico without authorization, said Piccinini.
